Imagine for a moment that you were part of Israel coming out of Egypt into the wilderness. From sun up to sun down there would have been something to do. In this abundance of necessary cooperation, I’m guessing people who did nothing would not be appreciated. Most likely, these people wouldn’t even be welcomed in the camp.
Takers are typically those who complain and criticize while failing to lift a finger. Even today, they drain others. Personally, I don’t want to be labeled as a taker. I want to be known as a giver. What about you?
The Book of Numbers starts off with a formal registration for every person over 20, every tribe and every household, “Take a census of ALL the congregations of the sons of Israel.” Why did YHWH ask for this? Why is each person so important? Is it for fame and recognition or is it for something far greater?
I’m convinced YHWH is asking for “investment.” For when there is personal commitment things change.
As you know, back seat drivers are found everywhere. They love to hear the sound of their own voice, but fail to drive. They find pleasure in finding fault, but lack in providing solutions. They love to search for better places without consideration towards what they already have. These people are not invested.
Consequently, like in the Book of Numbers, the New Testament church was asked to stand up and be counted as well. The Apostle Paul addresses this in I Corinthians 12 by giving advice to move people out of the “taker rut” and move them into a “giving highway.” He asks members of the body to consider using the gift given to them.
“For the body is not one part, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any less a part of the body.”
There is so much to do in YHWH’s Kingdom. Every part of the body is a part of Kingdom expansion. Sometimes we consider God’s gifts as only teaching, prophesying, or healing, but have you considered other gifts?
What about the gift of participation? Attending an event creates warmth. If no one attends, there is no reason for an event.
What about the gift of listening? Everyone has a burden to share, but not everyone needs advice. Ears work. If you like being heard, I am sure there are many others who want to unload as well.
What about the gift of conversation. Many are alone. Would they appreciate a bit of sharing time?
When we start giving back to the body with our presence – a gift is given. When we start giving back with words or with a listening ear – gifts are again given. Listen to the Spirit’s direction, then stand up and be counted for Kingdom work and I guarantee you will find blessings. Stay to yourself, complain, find fault, and I guarantee you will find the keys of being a taker. Choose instead to be in the Spirit and GIVE!
Be encouraged this Sabbath. Share yourself.
